December Joys. Photo of the Week #110

Earlier I used to have a tiny Christmas tree in December but I’ve never attempted that since I got the cat. So instead I put up my Christmas ornaments between the windowpanes out of the reach of kitty put still quite decorative. And then of course some candles, an amaryllis, hyacinths and a Christmas rose. Snow outside completes the picture. Me likes.

So here we go – it seems we will have another hard winter. Snow in November is not usual in Denmark, but in some parts they have had more than 50 cm and also in Copenhagen we have been struggling with our fair share of whiteness. And why not have a bit of fun then – as my brother and brother-in-law this afternoon when we visited our aunt in the countryside.

November hasn’t been too tough until now. We’ve had some wonderful deep blue skies and only one day of slush. Next week, they say, will be different. Colder. Snowier. But then December is almost here and we can turn to Christmas cosiness.

A couple of weeks ago I found myself on a scenic byway around Mount Nebo in the Uinta National Forest, Utah. The fall colours were stunning and I even got a bit of winter on top of the mountain where snow had already fallen.

The Bean. Photo of the Week #106

I was lucky enough to be in Chicago in the beginning of this week. Just for a day and just to see the Art Institute. But passing Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate or “The Bean” I got an unexpected bonus. I had never heard of The Bean and now everyone asks me “did you see The Bean??”, so I guess I was just one uneducated slob there, not having done my Chicago guide homework. Fortunately The Bean is fabulous enough to do very well, thank you, without all the talk and all the guidebook scribblings. It is a wonderful sculpture, and it looked beautiful under the blue sky and next to the red autumn leaves. What a great way to start the depressing month of November.

Hanging. Photo of the Week #105

I’ve travelled across the globe to attend to paintings from my museum in Denmark being installed at an exhibition in the Museum of Art in Provo, Utah. The exhibition is on Danish painter Carl Bloch (1834-1890) who the mormons just happen to cherish deeply. After three days on the road and one day of equilibration we finally got to open those crates and hang the pictures. Here are two of the guys who helped me with a painting of Christ in Gethsemane. It’s always a special moment when you hang the pictures at an exhibition – curators and their colleagues have been working on a show for years and finally it is really happening.

Autumn Fire. Photo of the Week #104

I’ve been away on a small autumn holiday with my family – hence the long silence. We made a fire in the wood surrounding our cabin and got rid of two large piles of branches from some trees that were cut down last year. It took us a couple of days so you can imagine the size of those piles. But it is one of the best autumn things to do – the smell of the smoke, the warmth of the fire, and the marshmallows you can fry on the embers. Good stuff. The photo shows my sister and dad working at burning all those twigs and branches.

The view from my office is not that inspiring and yet with a cactus, some nice postcards and a bit of Lomo-magic in some abstract way it comes close to matching the joy of being in that place. And the bars? Well they are not for keeping the employees in – they are for keeping art robbers out, since my workplace is a museum…

Impression from a flea market in the arcades surrounding Piazza Augusto Imperatore March this year. A wonderful place that also has a great kitchen utensils shop and the nice pizzeria/restaurant/enoteca ‘Gusto. Ah, I miss Rome.
